LIFE LOVE & LUXURIES with TROY L. RAWLINGS Your Top 5 Comfort Foods!

Now if yall know me, you know that I am a foodie who also loves to cook! Cooking is extremely therapeutic for me and then eating, the food I cook, is the cherry on top. But, I’ll get more into my cooking in a later blog. In this Blog I want to discuss my Top 5 Comfort Foods. And when I say comfort foods it doesn’t just mean a specific dish. It can be a whole Food Genre!! No limits baby! I mean it’s all about the FOODGASM!! WHAT? You’ve never heard of a Food-Gasm? Break the word down people…it’s caused by good food.
So, here’s my personal Top 5 Favorite Foods off that stick out in my memory-tastebuds:
(starting from least to greatest comfort and deliciousness for me)
5. HAMBURGER
There ain’t nothing that compares to a good ole’ juicy hamburger! I mean I even still go to McDonald’s for a plain hamburger sometimes for nostalgia. Though Burger King Whopper hits the spot better. And McDonalds is really the most smashed I ever want my burger. Here in Los Angeles they love smash-burgers. That’s just a smashed burger damn near so you can see through it. Me, myself, I like a good ole ⅓ to ¼ pound juicy burger. Quality meat, salt and pepper, soft bun, mayo, lettuce, lite ketchup & mustard. No cheese needed. Yum. I’ll try anybody’s burger at least once.
4. HOT DOG
I have to admit, I could eat a different Hot Dog for breakfast, lunch and dinner! A soft roll and some mustard! LAWD!! Yes. Hot Dogs are my guilty pleasure. There are some amazing hotdog stands around the country like Pink’s in LA! And if I’m cooking hotdogs at home, I will cook the entire 8 or 10 pack, because… I CAN!!!
3. FRENCH TOAST
Rejoice in Heaven Aunt Elsie!! My Aunt Elsie made the best French Toast. I remember spending the night at her house with anticipation of her phenomenal French Toast, with Baltimore’s best KING SYRUP (sweet molasses)… the recipe is different now… I hate when they change delicious classic recipes!! Anyway… Aunt Elsie had the perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar, perfect thickness of bread, and crisp edges yet soft at the same time. I still search for the perfect French Toast till this day.
2. MARYLAND CRAB CAKES (no filler)
I said what I said! No filler means no bread crumbs in the recipe. Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Meat, egg, herbs of choice, a bit of Old Bay, and my secret ingredient. That’s my recipe. And the best Maryland Crab Cakes stay in this range and don’t use bread, bread crumbs, or crackers to stretch the batch. And yes, Maryland is the best place to get them unless you know me.
1.INDIAN CUISINE
My FOODGASM Paradise! Indian Cuisine, when done right, is scientific. Those who cook Indian cuisine are skilled in knowing how to combine a multitude of herbs, spices and sauces; sometimes between 10-20 spices and one dish and magically losing none of them. I mean it’s like I can taste every herb and spice. Nothing muddled together. A culinary orchestration that flows in magnificent concert with my tastebuds.
About 22 years ago I stumbled upon Mem Sahib, a beautiful Indian Restaurant downtown Baltimore in one of the city’s main food districts near Lexington Market. The owner Ron Tuli took time to teach me why Indian Cuisine was head & shoulders above most other types of cuisine. The Ayurvedic herbs and spices are not only delicious but remarkably nutritious and have healing properties. I taste the freshness in every bite… from the Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani), Chicken Tikka Masala, Rogan Josh, to the Dal Makhani, Garlic Naan, and soooo much more. India is one place I desire to go to meet the beautiful people, and eat like a sane mad-man.

Troy, the best crab cakes I’ve ever had were in Norfolk, VA — nothing has topped them yet! But my go‑to spot in LA for French Toast is The Favor Table on Florence. That Peach Cobbler topping hits completely different.
